Be Your Own Coach is filled with exercises and practices that you can use to coach yourself. In this section we will continue to offer you more practices to work with the ideas in the book.

If you happen to be a corporate coach, these practices will provide you with alternatives to use in coaching courses you may be teaching using our book. You may also use these practices with your in-house coaching clients.

If you are an independent professional coach, you can use these practices as a supplement to the ones offered in the book.

 

NEW POSITION OR RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

 

 

 

The first opening for coaching identified in Be Your Own Coach is when you receive a promotion or change job responsibilities. Here’s a practice you can use when you face this type of opening. This practice works best if you let your “observer self” notice how you are feeling and what you are doing to respond to your feelings. The point of the practice is to help you accept and learn from what your feelings may be telling you. It’s helpful to take ten minutes at the end of your day to record in your journal what you observed.

  1. As you step into your new role, notice how you feel. Your emotions can range from excitement and happiness to feeling overwhelmed or experiencing self-doubt. It’s possible to feel many different emotions in this situation. What feelings do you notice? (You can refer to the list on pages 32-33 of Be Your Own Coach.)
  2. Notice how you are responding to the feelings. Are you able to acknowledge them? Do you notice yourself criticizing yourself? Hiding how you feel? Wishing to take action to “fix” the feelings?
  3. How does your habitual way of responding to these feelings help you or hinder you?
  4. If you were to slow down and learn from the feelings, what might they be telling you? For example, if you are feeling tentative, what does that say about what you might need? With the feelings you’ve identified, take time to explore what they may be telling you.
  5. Use your journal to write out three possible action steps you could take in response to your feelings. (You can refer to the section on Choice Management on page 70 of Be Your Own Coach if you’d like some ideas.)
  6. If you have a coaching partner, discuss your action plan with that person and ask if they have other possible actions for you to consider.
  7. Implement one of your action steps. In your journal, write out the result. What have you learned about yourself from your observations?
